El Dorado

ABOUT

Living your life like it’s golden? If not, our El Dorado is sure to brighten up your day — and your tastebuds.

El Dorado — the Spanish translation for “the Golden One” — refers to the legendary kings of the Muisca people who populated modern-day Colombia from 600 CE to 1600 CE. Within Muisca society, gold was highly sought after, not for its monetary value, but rather for its spiritual power: its connection to the gods and its ability to bring balance and harmony. This is perfectly articulated whenever the Muisca society selected a new leader.

The new leader would go through a long initiation process leading up to the final act of paddling out onto a sacred lake. On a raft, the leader would be completely naked except for a covering of gold dust along with gold treasures and other precious jewels. Once upon the very center of the lake, “the Golden Man” and a crowd of spectators would throw their gold offerings into the sacred lake. The climax of the ceremony arrived when the golden king himself leapt into the lake and when he emerged, cleaned of gold, he had become the king of the Muisca.

The base spirit for this drink is Brugal 1888 Gran Reserva Doblemente Anejado. This double aged Dominican rum is first aged in ex-bourbon American oak casks, then in European oak, first-fill sherry casks. We brighten up the rum with fresh lemon juice and rich simply syrup muddled with fresh orange wedges and Maraschino cherries.

This drink is served in a coupe glass. A sugar rim garnish is optional.
